Course Overview

The Diploma in Dairy Engineering aims to develop technically sound human resource for dairy industry. Upgrading the technical proficiency of lower level workers/ technicians already working in the dairy and allied sectors is also intended. The focus is on developing competencies in procurement of milk, fluid milk processing, production of value added products and quality control aspects in dairy plants. The programme also imparts development of skills for entrepreneurship to encourage self-employment in dairy processing activities. The knowledge imparted facilitates good manufacturing practices in the processing sector and hygiene.

Eligibility and admission

Passed 10th Std/ SSC examination. Obtained at least 35% marks at the qualifying examination.

The programme for each year is divided into two semesters. Each semester is of 18 to 19 weeks of instruction work. There is an inter-semester break of about 2 weeks between first and second semester and summer vacation of approximately five weeks at the end of the second semester (Academic session) till the commencement of the next academic session.

Dairy Engineering is one of the top career choices made by students in India. There is a lot of scope in terms of career opportunities. Presently there are more than 400 dairy plants in our country and many dairy equipment manufacturers. Graduates seek employment in government and private organizations such as rural banks, manufacturing firms, cooperatives, milk product processing and dairy farms. Dairy management is one such diversified field consisting of many tasks and involving many principles.

Professionals in this career can also opt for teaching jobs in universities and colleges. Dairy technologists also become freelancers such as small-scale milk plants, ice-cream units, creamery products processing and or can work as consultants. A consultant needs several years of working experience in dairy farms to be successful. Quality control departments also recruit dairy technologists. This field has lot of opportunities for those who want to pursue a career as a researcher.
